Leap Orbit Contributes to COVID Response

The unprecedented time in which we are living demands innovation and creativity at every turn. Leap Orbit employees are up to the challenge. So, when Mickey Stringer, one of Leap Orbit’s first employees, saw an opportunity for innovation, he jumped at the chance to create something that would make a difference and help aid in the COVID -19 response efforts. Mickey, in a joint effort with CRISP (Chesapeake Regional Information System for our Patients), created a tool for post-acute care centers that provides those coordinating the COVID-19 response with timely information. The tool was born out of a need to add efficiencies to existing processing and introduce COVID-19 surveillance where it's needed most.

The data entered into the form – which includes daily capacity and COVID-19 infection stats – is used by CRISP to generate daily reports. The information from the reports is used to add efficiency to hospital discharges, place residents at capable facilities in a timely manner, and appropriately direct public health resources. CRISP has been designated as Maryland's statewide HIE (Health Information Exchange) and the tool is currently being used in Maryland. Because of CRISP’s expansive HIE network in Maryland, the information generated can be integrated seamlessly with a holistic understanding of patients and facilities across the state.

In late April Maryland began reporting data on individual post-acute care centers in the State. The data released by the State includes the number of cases and fatalities at each center. The numbers reported by Maryland are collected from the COVID-19 tool and is available online to the public.
